Adding Products

1. Essential Information

  • Product Name (10-100 characters)
    • Best Practice: Be specific and descriptive. Include brand, key attributes (color, size, model), and searchable keywords.
    • Good: "Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) - Noise Cancelling Wireless Earbuds - White"
    • Bad: "Earbuds"
  • Description (100-1,000 characters)
    • Supports Markdown (bold, lists, links).
    • Best Practice: Clearly state what the product is, its benefits, and key specifications.
  • Category & Subcategory
    • Select the most relevant category (e.g., Fashion > Women's) to help customers discover your products.

      Brand Name (Optional)

    • Use the official brand name to build trust and allow customers to filter.

      Tags (Up to 10)

    • Add keywords customers might use to search (e.g., "sustainable", "handmade", "bestseller", "vegan").

2. Product Images & Media

  • Main Image (Required)
    • This is your most important photo.
    • Specs: 1000x1000px or larger (square), JPG or PNG, under 5MB.
    • Do: Use a clean white/neutral background, ensure the product is well-lit, sharp, and fills 80-90% of the frame.
    • Don't: Use cluttered backgrounds, heavy filters, or watermarks.

      Additional Images (Up to 4)

    • Show different angles, details, scale, and the product in use.
    • Example (Watch): 1. Front view, 2. Side profile, 3. Close-up of clasp, 4. Worn on-wrist (lifestyle).

      Product Clips (Recommended)

    • Short videos (10-60 seconds) dramatically increase engagement.
    • How to add: Upload directly or capture clips from your past live streams.
    • Best Practice: Keep clips short (10-30 seconds), well-lit, and show the product in action.

3. Pricing Strategy

  • Regular Price
    • Your standard selling price. Your price must cover all costs and leave your desired profit.
    • Formula: Your Price = (Product Cost + Operating Costs) + Desired Profit + Platform Fees
    • Pricing Psychology:
      • Charm Pricing: $49.99 often feels significantly cheaper than $50.00.
      • Premium Pricing: Round numbers ($50, $100) can signal quality.

        Sale Price (Optional)

    • A temporary promotional price. Use this for live stream flash sales, seasonal promotions, or to clear inventory.
    • Display: $59.99 $44.99 (Save 25%!)

      Cost Tracking (Private)

    • Enter your "cost of goods" (what you paid for the item) to track your true profit margins in the Analytics dashboard.

4. Inventory Management

  • Quantity Tracking
    • Set your initial stock level. This number automatically decreases as you receive orders.
    • Products are hidden when quantity reaches 0.
    • Pro-Tip: Set low stock alerts (e.g., 5-10 items) and hide products before they sell out to prevent overselling during a busy live stream.

      SKU (Stock Keeping Unit)

    • A unique code (e.g., SHIRT-BLK-M   or 12345-01  ) to identify each product.
    • Benefit: Essential for tracking inventory, managing warehouse operations, and ensuring accurate order fulfillment.

Product Variants

Use variants to sell a single product in multiple options (like size or color) without creating separate listings.

  • When to Use: Apparel (Size, Color), Electronics (Storage Capacity), Home Goods (Scent, Size).

    How to Add:

    1. In the product editor, click Add Variant.
    2. Choose a variant type (e.g., "Size") and add options (e.g., "S", "M", "L").
    3. Add a second type (e.g., "Color") and add options (e.g., "Black", "White").
    4. Set a unique SKU, Price, and Stock Quantity for each combination (e.g., Black-M).
    5. Upload variant-specific images (e.g., show the black shirt when "Black" is selected).
  • Benefit: A cleaner catalog for you and a simpler selection process for your customers.

Product Status Workflow

Control your product's visibility with three statuses:

  1. Draft (Private):
    • Not visible to customers.
    • Use this for work-in-progress listings, seasonal items you're preparing in advance, or products awaiting restock.
  2. Active (Public):
    • Visible, searchable, and purchasable on your shop page.
    • Use for all products that are complete and ready to sell.
  3. Featured (Highlighted):
    • Same as "Active," but also highlighted in the "Featured Products" section of your channel.
    • Use this for bestsellers, new arrivals, or products you plan to showcase in your next live stream. (Limit to 5-10).

Shipping Configuration

  • Per-Product Shipping: Set a flat shipping rate, dimensions, and weight for an individual item.
  • Shipping Profiles (Recommended):
    • Save time by creating pre-configured profiles in Settings > Shipping Profiles.
    • Define your "From" address, carriers (USPS, FedEx), services (Priority, First Class), processing time, and free shipping thresholds (e.g., "Free shipping on orders over $100").
    • Apply a single profile to dozens of products at once.

Optimization & Analytics

Product Optimization Checklist

  • Use clear, high-resolution photos (3-5 images minimum).
  • Write compelling descriptions that highlight benefits, not just features.
  • Use product clips to show the item in action.
  • Ensure pricing is competitive.
  • Select the most accurate category.
  • Encourage customer reviews to build social proof.
  • Double-check that all specifications (dimensions, materials) are included.

Analytics & Performance

Use the Analytics Dashboard to track product performance.

  • Metrics: Identify total units sold, revenue, conversion rate (views to purchases), and add-to-cart rate.
  • Top Performers: Identify your bestsellers by units, revenue, or profit margin. Action: Feature these products and keep them well-stocked.
  • Underperformers: Find products with low views or high views but low sales. Action: Try improving the listing (new photos, better description, price adjustment) or consider discontinuing the item.

Advanced Features

  • Product Notes (Internal): Add private notes to products (e.g., supplier details, reorder reminders).
  • Product Events (Live Stream Integration): When you showcase a product during a stream, OpenDay creates a timestamped "product event." This links directly to the product and helps track engagement.
  • Custom Fields (Enterprise): Add unique attributes like "Sustainability Certification," "Made in USA," or "Limited Edition."

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How many products should I list?

Start with 10-20 high-quality listings. Quality over quantity. It's better to have 10 fully-optimized products than 100 incomplete ones.

  • Should I use variants or separate listings?

Use variants when the core product is the same (e.g., a t-shirt in different sizes/colors). Use separate listings when the products are fundamentally different (e.g., a t-shirt vs. a hoodie).

  • What if a product sells out during a live stream?

Set inventory conservatively. If it sells out, you can take pre-orders (if you can restock quickly), offer a similar product, or ask viewers to join a wishlist for restock notifications.
